Magazine Cover Roundup

Our thoughts on some of the most notable covers from December 2024/January 2025

This month, fashion seems to be all about bold metallics, thoughtful concepts, and bold photography. From sleek silhouettes to powerful imagery, everything feels fresh and full of energy—a perfect transition into the new year!

Vogue Portugal - Akur Chol

Gillian: The title of Vogue Portugal’s three covers are “what’s next?” a look into a time before phones, social media, and the internet and what this continued “lack of humanity” will look like in the future. The other two alternate covers are more obvious in terms of the theme, but this one really is a stand out for me. I’ve been staring at it for a while and can’t figure out exactly what it all is or means but I get a high-fashion dystopian quality from it. What do you think?

Liam: This cover is a work of art. The soft, vibrant colours complement each other beautifully—I LOVE! The composition is intriguing—everything from Akur’s pose to the varying levels within the frame adds depth. Every detail feels deliberate and thought-provoking, making it a perfect combination of fashion, photography, and storytelling.

Gillian: I just love a concept cover.

Vogue US (Digital Cover) - Digital Cover

Gillian: Hannah Jackson wrote the article for this cover piece really well. The article is about how fashion has seen a shift in its consumers — fashion buyers are more financially conscious and some big names in fashion are responding or relocating (i.e. Zac Posen going to Gap) and yet the visuals for this cover lack originality completely. “Creativity for Everyone” … where? Your job is to make affordable fashion look high-end, and they completely missed the mark.

Liam: I already dislike ensemble covers, and this is no exception. Every element of this cover is underwhelming.

Vogue Germany (Digital Cover) - Gisèle Pelicot

Gillian: A beautiful and historically important cover that deserves to be a Vogue cover. I only wonder why Vogue France hasn’t taken the lead on this, as it’s a French case.

Liam: This is an incredibly powerful cover, symbolizing resilience and the fight against sexual violence. I love that they chose to honour Gisèle Pelicot, giving her a platform to share her story. However, I do have an aversion to illustrated covers. I feel this illustration doesn’t do her justice, and I think a photograph could capture her emotional depth and authenticity more effectively.

Gillian: For me, I think the portrait style makes it feel extra special in the sense that she’s a historical figure. But there’s also the conversation to be had that Pelicot isn’t responsible for the change to be made, but here she is putting it at the forefront anyway.

Liam: I’m just biased #illustrationhater

Harper’s BAZAAR (The Art Issue) - Miley Cyrus

Liam: Miley looks stunning in this feathered Dior bodysuit—she’s channelling a modern Greek goddess. The warm tones perfectly enhance this vibe, making it absolutely gorgeous!

Gillian: The pose is giving me very dance studio 2000s and the body suit is giving me Can’t be Tamed so in conclusion, I love it.

Vogue Italia - Maty Fall & Carlita

Liam: The December 2024 issue of Vogue Italia celebrates its 60th anniversary with six covers by Rafael Pavarotti, shot at an after-party in Milan. The series captures an impromptu energy while maintaining a striking, bold attitude. Maty Fall looks phenomenal here—look at those legs!

Gillian: I liked this whole shoot a lot. The impromptu energy, as Liam put it, and the composition makes it feel very anti-Vogue and more indie-mag so I could see how people are 50/50 about this online. I do have to question the meaningless “no social media, the fun is back!” claim???? What does it mean Vogue Italia…I’d love to know.

Liam: What do they know that we don’t???

Vogue Greece - Anthi Fakidari

Liam: I’m in love with the timelessness of this cover, definitely reminiscent of late 1980s fashion photography. It feels familiar yet fresh, effortlessly blending nostalgia with modernity—a perfect start to 2025!

Gillian: Yessss Liam I totally agree, this feels very ‘Vogue’ in the best way possible.
